PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Yarwun RMA Civil Construction Works project is located 15 kilometres west of Gladstone and 450 kilometres north of Brisbane in Queensland.

Operated by Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA), the Yarwun processing plant treats bauxite to produce alumina. The Residue Management Area (RMA) facility is used for the storage of byproducts.

CONTRACT SUMMARY

NRW was contracted to complete civil construction works necessary to enable the process plant to continue the planned annual production, by increasing capacity for the residual waste.

The scope of works included:

  • Dam embankment construction
  • Dam embankment construction
  • Sub-soil drainage and sump installation
  • Construction of haul roads
  • Surface drainage
  • Borrow pit development
  • Rock protection

At its peak NRW had 58 employees and contractors completing the construction of the dam wall raise around the RMA facility embankment.
