BGC CONTRACTING ACQUISITION
NRW Holdings acquired BGC Contracting, including the Mining, Construction and DIAB Engineering businesses. The expanded NRW Group offers broader capabilities and builds a stronger platform for all stakeholders.
RCR Mining Technologies Acquisition
NRW Holdings acquired RCR Mining Technologies and RCR Heat Treatment. The business is complementary to NRW by providing incremental services, in line with our strategic objectives.
Dalgaranga Gold Project
NRW was awarded the 72 month mining contract by Gascoyne Resources. The total value of the contract is over $300 million, with mining taking place at Gilbey’s Golden Wing and Sly Fox Open Pits.
NRW was awarded the Carrapateena Copper Mine contract by OZ Minerals, located 150km north of Port Augusta in South Australia. The contract award is a significant milestone for NRW as it seeks to diversify in both client and geographical location.
NRW further built on their strategy to expand operations in the east coast in August through the acquisition of one of Queensland’s largest civil construction, urban development and mining services contractors, Golding.
Hughes Drilling Acquisition
In December, NRW Holdings acquired Hughes Drilling east coast operations, integrating the business quickly and successfully into their Action Drill & Blast division.
Forrestfield-Airport Link Project
NRW, in a joint venture with Italian based company Salini Impregilo, were awarded the $1.2 billion design and construct contract for the Forrestfield-Airport Link. The contract work includes a 8.5 km extension of the Public Transport Authority’s urban rail network, including 7.1 km twin bored underground tunnels.
Nammuldi Mine Project
NRW was awarded the contract mining and ore haulage to increase production at Rio Tinto’s Nammuldi Mine. At it’s peak the contract had 135 on site personnel, including local Indigenous participation.
Middlemount Coal Mine Project Extension
NRW secured a three-year extension valued at approximately $330 million at the Middlemount Coal Mine. The extension term maximised the cost benefit and efficient utilisation of the large fleet of equipment for both Middlemount Coal and NRW.
Roy Hill Bulk Earthworks & Concrete Package project
In April, NRW was awarded a $200 million contract by Samsung C & T for construction of the Concrete and Detailed Earthworks Package at Roy Hill. This award builds on the existing relationship with both Samsung C & T and Roy Hill and came following the successful completion of the Roy Hill Rail Mine Site Bulk Earthworks Project and the award of the Roy Hill Rail Project.
Powerup, NRW’s Indigenous pre-employment program, reached a massive milestone in 2014 when it saw its 250th participant graduate in April. Upon Graduation, Neil Mourambine was hired as a Roller Operator at the Roy Hill Rail Project Section 3.
NRW celebrates 20 years
November 2014 marked 20 years in business for NRW. Established in 1994, NRW continues to operate as a leading contractor in the mining and civil construction industries. Our commitment to our people, safety and the communities in which we operate is the foundation of our business and the key to our longevity in the industry.
A Safe Day, Every Day
The A Safe Day, Every Day Program saw $110,000 donated to charity.
Roy Hill Rail & Mine Site Earthworks projects
In September 2013, NRW were awarded their most significant Civil contract to date, a $620 million contract with Samsung C & T Corporation for earthworks on the rail formation between the Roy Hill Mine Site and Port Hedland. In addition to this, earlier in the year NRW were also awarded a $67 million Bulk Earthworks contract at the Roy Hill Mine Site.
Joint Venture between NRW and Njamal ICRG JV
The Jartu Joint Venture was established between NRW and Njamal ICRG JV to undertake bulk earthworks at Fortescue’s North Star Magnetite Project – situated on the traditional lands of the Njamal people. As with NRW’s other Indigenous joint ventures, this partnership enables the Njamal community to develop their business skills and capability with NRW’s experience and support, whilst providing employment opportunities to their people.
Action Drill & Blast
In 2013, Action Drill & Blast were awarded two significant contracts. The first was a four year contract to provide drilling services direct to Fortescue Metals Group at the Cloudbreak mine. This contract was the largest contract awarded to Action Drill & Blast at the time with a base value of approximately $140 million. The second was a three year contract for drill and blast operations at the Middlemount Coal Mine in Queensland, valued at approximately $60 million.
Middlemount Coal Mining Project
In February, the Middlemount Coal Mining Services contract was restructured to a dry hire contract. As part of the arrangement, NRW provided ongoing maintenance services for the mining fleet until the extended contract completion date.
HSE Recognition Program
The HSE Recognition Program, a key part of the A Safe Day, Every Day Program was a great success in 2012, seeing a grand total of $190,000 donated to charity on behalf of the winning Project of the Quarter and Project of the Year teams.
Cape Lambert Port B & Stockyard Earthworks Project
In September, NRW was awarded a $133 million earthworks contract for Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s Cape Lambert Port B 353Mtpa Project (CLB353). As with the original contract awarded in 2011, these works were undertaken in joint venture with the Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi Foundation Limited (NYFL).
BHP Port Hedland Inner Harbour Project
NRW were awarded a second contract at BHP Billiton’s Port Hedland Inner Harbour Project.
Launched A Safe Day, Every Day Program
NRW launched the A Safe Day, Every Day Program. The Program was implemented across the Civil and Mining Divisions including in the field. Our employees acknowledge that safety is everyone’s responsibility and without compromise, safety takes priority. Every single person is actively encouraged to identify and mitigate risks. Above all else, they are encouraged to have A Safe Day, Every Day.
Prestigious Supplier of the year Award
In February NRW was awarded Rio Tinto’s prestigious Supplier of the Year Award in the Construction category. David Joyce, RTIO’s Managing Director of Expansion Projects, stated in his presentation speech that, “NRW exemplifies what is means to work together to get a job done, both safely and prioritising Indigenous Engagement, to meet the goals required as we build our project.”
Solomon Spur Rail Project
NRW delivered a diverse range of civil and mining projects for Fortescue Metals Group including; Anderson Point Port Expansion, Solomon Spur Rail, Solomon Tail Storage Facility, Solomon Early Mining Services, Christmas Creek Mining.
five-year framework agreement with Rio Tinto
NRW signed a milestone five-year framework agreement with Rio Tinto Iron Ore for its 333 Programme in the Pilbara, worth $260 million in its first year.
First Coal Project in Queensland
NRW successfully diversified into new markets, with its first coal project in Queensland (Middlemount) as well as its first oil and gas earthworks contract for Chevron’s Wheatstone Project.
Karara Iron Ore Project
NRW were awarded their first major concrete package, a $210 million concrete and civil package at Karara Iron Ore Project for Karara Mining Limited.
Action Drill & Blast
Action Drill & Blast was established to provide specialist drill and blast services to NRW as well as the external market. The company operates as a subsidiary of NRW Holdings Limited.
CEO Jules Pemberton
July 2010 saw the departure of our founding CEO, Jeff McGlinn. Jeff handed the corporate reins to his then Chief Operating Officer, Jules Pemberton. Promac ceased to be a part of NRW Holdings Limited. NRW Chairman Ian Burston said Mr McGlinn was instrumental in establishing NRW in 1994, and played a major role in the Company’s growth and development during the past 16 years.
RGP5 Rail South Duplication Project
2010 saw our relationship with BHP Billiton Iron Ore grow stronger with the completion of the RGP5 Rail South Duplication Project and the award of a variation to the works at the Chichester Rangers – both projects done in Joint Venture with Laing O’Rourke and John Holland. The approximate value of the works came in at $253 million.
Pannawonica Bridge Repair Project
NRW reinforced its reputation with Rio Tinto by winning and completing another Indigenous joint venture project, this time with the Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi Foundation Limited (NYFL) on the Pannawonica Bridge Repair Project.
Western Turner Syncline Project
NRW led the way in providing sustainable business opportunities for Indigenous organisations with the award of the $200 million Rio Tinto mining contract at Western Turner Syncline in joint venture with Indigenous landowner group Eastern Guruma Pty Ltd.
Cape Preston Bulk Earthworks and Breakwater Construction Project
NRW was awarded Cape Preston Bulk Earthworks and Breakwater Construction package on the Sino Iron Project for CITIC Pacific which included over 6.5 million cubic metres of rock and a 3.2 kilometre breakwater.
Indigenous Engagement, NRW launched Powerup Program
With a key focus on Indigenous Engagement, NRW launched the Powerup Program – an intensive pre-employment work ready program aimed at Indigenous candidates lacking entry level skills to break into the civil and mining industry.
Brockman 4 Project
NRW expanded the Mining Division with award of a three year mining contract for mining works at OM Holdings Bootu Creek (NT) worth $210 million. The Civil Division also recorded a milestone award with the $250 million Brockman 4 Project for Rio Tinto.
NRW Contracted by Fortescue Metals Group
Our relationship with Fortescue Metals Group was established in 2007, after Cyclone George. NRW was contracted to undertake 106 kilometres of Greenfields rail formation as a part of Fortescue’s Mine to Port, construction of 1300 bed camp and improvements to existing damaged camps.
NRW listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (NWH)
After 13 years of strong growth NRW listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (NWH).
NRW crossed international waters for the first time in 2007, when Simfer SA (a subsidiary of Rio Tinto) awarded an earthworks contract at its Simandou project in the West African country of Guinea.
AES Equipment Solutions
NRW Holdings acquired Action Mining Services (AMS), a provider of heavy equipment maintenance services as a support for the civil and mining business and to act as a business operating in its own right. Action Mining Services underwent a re brand in 2014 and is now referred to as AES Equipment Solutions.
In order to fund further growth, a private equity placement to Stark Investments was made. This year was also when NRW secured a 2 year mineral sands mining contract on the Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory.
Yandicoogina Junction South East (JSE) Expansion Project
NRW won the largest contract in the company’s history with $92 million award for civil works on Rio Tinto’ Yandicoogina Junction South East (JSE) Expansion Project.
Commenced operations at Tom Price Mine
With steady growth in projects and an increasing workforce, the decision was made to acquire a heavy earthmoving fleet. NRW also commenced operations at Tom Price Mine for Rio Tinto.
Paraburdoo Mining Project
Our relationship with Rio Tinto continued to go from strength to strength and we were able to negotiate a significant waste mining contract at Paraburdoo.
BHP Iron Ore
NRW’s relationship with BHP Iron Ore started in 2002 when we completed the first of many rail sidings at their Mt Whaleback iron ore mine in Newman.
NRW’s successful breakthrough into the Pilbara
NRW’s relationship with Rio Tinto (formerly Hamersley Iron) formally commenced in 2002 when we were awarded a tailings dam contract at Paraburdoo. This contract represented NRW’s successful breakthrough into the Pilbara.
Safety Management System
As the company increased in size, NRW established a dedicated Safety Division. As a result, we completed an overhaul of our safety and management systems and achieved initial pre-qualification for Rio Tinto Iron Ore – a significant milestone.
NRW growing reputation recognised by BRW Magazine
NRW was recognised by BRW magazine as the third fastest growing private company in Australia. This reinforced our growing reputation in the industry and provided the basis for future growth.
NRW’s Transport Division
NRW’s Transport Division was established in the late 1990’s. What looked like something from a wreckers yard was rebuilt, refurbished, refitted and was transformed into our first prime mover.
Kanowna Belle mine cutback project
Awarded a mine cutback contract at Kanowna Belle for Delta Gold, leading to a three year crusher feed and mine services contract.
NRW acquired Opthalmia Contracting to establish a presence in the Pilbara and began operating from Newman. Opthalmia held a three year contract to service BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s Mt Whaleback iron ore mine.
1996 was an exciting year for NRW as we moved into our new headquarters in Welshpool, which for the first time also had a fully operational workshop.
Westlime Contract, Dongara WA
Before too long, we were one of the leading tailings dam constructors in the region and we also landed our first long term major contract for Westlime in Dongara, WA.
NRW was founded in Kalgoorlie in 1994 and the name NRW was derived from an initial of each of the co–founders. NRW’s first projects were in Jandakot and at the Granny Smith Mine.
