PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Midwest Rail Joint Venture (MWRJV) between NRW, Laing O’Rourke and Brookfield Multiplex participated in the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) to assist Arc Infrastructure (formerly Brookfield Rail) in launching a project that was requested to meet budgetary constraints. NRW carried out the earthworks for the Project. A number of costed design options were explored during the ECI phase to provide Arc Infrastructure (formerly Brookfield Rail) with the most feasible solution.
The Project scope included upgrading the existing 92 kilometres of narrow gauge rail (designed for the transport of wheat in rail carriages) to 60kg/m narrow gauge rail suitable for iron ore haulage.
Two thirds of the rail length required realignment, necessitating a new earthworks embankment adjacent to the existing rail. The earthworks and drainage component of the work was completed two months ahead of the rail component finish date.
